There’s good news for nonsmoking, original-heart people, too, since Harvard researchers found that cocoa can blunt the endothelial dysfunction associated with aging.

Welcome to my Wilmington entrepreneur blog. Today’s article is a bit philosophical. I want to talk about time. I would argue that time is more precious than almost anything else in life.

How are you managing your most valuable resource?

Are you working full-time for a corporation that may lay you off any day? Are you spending a lot of time training for a new Wilmington career? Are you able to take the time necessary to nurture your relationships? When was the last time (there’s that word again) you spent a whole day playing?

I am JJ Birden. I run a Xocai Sipping Coco Direct Sales business from my Wilmington home. I have been steadily building my Xocai Sipping Coco income-generating business since July 2005. Now that I have channels of residual income, the checks can come even if I take a three-week vacation with my family.

Sure, the money is great, but guess what I value more than the financial security? More Free Time. That’s right.

I am now living life on my own terms.

What is CRP And Why Is It Important For Wilmington?

Burgaw Health Chocolate Hi, I am Wilmington Xocai blogger JJ Birden. Today’s post explores the link between CRP levels, inflammation and heart disease. What is CRP? CRP is a measure of C-reactive protein in the blood. You can get your CRP tested when you get your cholesterol measured. A high level of CRP tells you that inflammation is present in your body.

The health dangers of inflammation are well established. If your blood vessels are inflamed, you may be at risk for heart disease. A high CRP level can occur even if no other heart disease risk factors are present. The Mayo Clinic has an article on this if you want to read more.

What does this have to do with Xocai health chocolate?

Antioxidants lower CRP levels, thereby reducing inflammation. The main ingredient in Xocai healthy chocolate is cacao. Cacao is the #1 Antioxidant Food.

The National Institute of Aging conducted a study in 2004 which found a link between antioxidant supplements and lower CRP levels. According to the researchers: “taking an antioxidant supplement was associated with CRP levels similar to those seen in those who exercised 180 minutes/week or more and did not take supplements.“

I am certainly not recommending that you stop exercising. I just wanted to point out that the NIA study showed just how effective antioxidant supplements are in reducing CRP levels even in people who do not exercise. Obviously, the best combination for heart health is antioxidant consumption coupled with regular exercise.

Something not so well known in Wilmington is that the dirt itself contains beneficial bacteria that can aid in depression, cognitive functioning, and even in fighting some cancers.

Working with soil in Wilmington – digging, pulling weeds, harvesting vegetables – exposes North Carolina kids and parents to a strain of bacteria called mycobacterium vaccae. Recent research reveals that m. vaccae triggers the release of seratonin, which can elevate mood and reduce stress.

In one study, two groups of mice were fed peanut butter sandwiches before finding their way through a difficult maze. One of the groups had m. vaccae spread on the sandwiches. The mice that ingested the bacteria ran the maze twice as fast and exhibited half as many stress behaviors as the mice that didn’t have the bacteria.

Think of Wilmington kids in the ‘good ole’ days,’ running around on unpaved roads, playing in meadows, forests, and dirt piles, and half of the time probably bare-foot. It is quite a different childhood than the sanitized version that exists in our society today. Children not only need more time out-of-doors, but they need to get dirty! Let your Wilmington neighbors hear you yell: ‘Kids, go outside and get dirty!’

Hampstead, Leland, and Wilmington parents may do themselves and their children a favor by adding to their kids’ emotional, physical, and intellectual health by letting them play in the dirt!
